Southbridge School Committee's first 2026 meeting ends with a failed motion and a budget warning. A motion by Member Stephanie Rivers to send the committee's operating protocols document to the policy subcommittee for further review failed for lack of a second at the January 13 meeting, leaving the document in place as a working reference. The receiver superintendent warned the committee that the Student Opportunity Act, a key state funding stream, is set to expire at the end of the coming fiscal year, saying, "it's better to plan now than a year from now." He also reported that the district's dual language program is "quickly becoming a model for the state" and that a bilingual hub grant has been awarded through the University of Massachusetts.
Chairwoman Brittany Davison recognized Southbridge Middle School Principal Sarah Houle as the MSAA's Principal of the Year, an honor she said "speaks not only to her work, but to the positive direction our schools are moving in."
