School Committee · Meeting of September 8, 2026

Southbridge School Committee begins push to exit state receivership. Member Stephanie Rivers read Massachusetts General Law at length to argue the committee can now petition the commissioner, saying the district has "asked to be removed from receivership" and setting a six-month goal for a formal petition. The superintendent reported suspensions down to two so far this year from 11 a year ago and 20 two years ago, with attendance in the "mid to high 90s" percent.

The committee also adopted Policy ACL, barring civil immigration arrests on school property under a directive tied to Governor Maura Healey's administration, and kept its training budget within $4,500 after MASC conference registration rose to $675 per member. Rivers said she will skip this year's MASC conference, citing "other obligations."
