Southbridge Conservation Commission continues subdivision hearing, canal remediation work ongoing

The commission also voted unanimously to continue a public hearing on a subdivision remediation violation to July 23 at 6 p.m., with a legal representative now intermediating communications on the matter. Earlier in the meeting, members discussed canal remediation near the Stonarch culvert on the East Main Street corridor, noting the contractor had been unable to access the northern basin section due to unstable ground, leaving a considerable volume of fill material in place despite the project being roughly 80 percent complete.

A brownfields environmental assessment tied to a CMRPC-administered EPA grant remains paused, pending a clarification from DEP brownfields representative Kevin Joust before consultant Weston Samson can advance to a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment; commissioners noted an October grant deadline.
