Protection of Persons and Property Subcommittee · Meeting of September 3, 2026

SOUTHBRIDGE — The Southbridge Protection of Persons and Property Subcommittee confirmed two new fire lieutenants and backed an alternate animal control inspector. Members voted unanimously to confirm Colin Matthews and 5-0 to confirm Joshua Thomas as lieutenants in the Southbridge Fire Department, following a four-month promotional process run with outside firm BadgeQuest. The fire chief said the department is now "fully staffed" ahead of a planned move to a new fire station within 60 days.

The subcommittee also voted 5-0 to recommend a police officer, identified as Officer Cruz, as the town's first alternate inspector of animals after a coverage gap earlier this year; the police chief said "it will not happen again, I can guarantee that." The board further approved prior-year utility payments of $355.53 to National Grid and $353.03 and $39.22 to Verizon, each requiring a two-thirds town council vote.
