Panel votes 2-1 to send charter changes to council
Southbridge's General Government Subcommittee voted 2-1 to forward five charter revision recommendations to Town Council, including ending council term limits.
Joint General Government Subcommittee · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Southbridge's General Government Subcommittee voted 2-1 to forward five charter revision recommendations to Town Council, including ending council term limits. Former Charter Review Committee clerk Max Gullickson presented the package, which also strikes the town manager's charter-mandated bachelor's degree requirement, lowers the removal-vote threshold from six councilors to five, and requires a funding source whenever the council declares a financial emergency. Councilor Steeves voted no, while Citizen Member Ortiz and a third member voted yes.
Resident Maureen Doyle objected that ending term limits and loosening bylaw-reading rules is "taking away some democracy." A separate motion to strike the item from the agenda over Open Meeting Law notice concerns failed for lack of a second. The subcommittee also unanimously backed two Assessor's Office job description updates and a lease extension through September 14, 2027, for the Registry of Motor Vehicles Division's current location.
